Description:
Target Audience Program Overview and Objectives The 2018 West Virginia Geriatrics Society Scientific Assem-bly, “Caregiving: Challenges and Solutions” is designed to en-hance the care of the geriatric population and address pressing is-sues currently on the forefront of geriatric care. In communities across the Mountain State, nearly 300,000 West Virginians care for older parents, spouses or other loved ones, helping them to live in-dependently in their own homes. These family caregivers have a huge responsibility. This activity will recognize and discuss that caring for others is difficult and caregivers often feel stress. The training will focus on identifying burnout, stress relief, specific strategies for caring for the patient with Alzheimer’s disease and those with chronic conditions. They will learn how palliative and hospice care services can be used to enhance the quality of life for patients. The Proposed content of the CME relates to the extreme need seen in our state including lack of services in more rural parts of the state. .This CME , in line with the American Geriatric Society, will assist the collaborative practice of all disciplines involved in Geriatric care in West Virginia. After attending the Assembly atten-dees will be able to: ? Define and identify signs and symptoms of physician and care-giver burnout ? Learn techniques to help with stress relief ? Describe common challenges effecting grandparents raising grandchildren ? Identify resources for assistive technology, durable medical equipment and telemedicine. ? Describe quality care for adults with dementia ? Determine when palliative or hospice care is appropriate As part of the Scientific Assembly, WVGS is sponsoring its annual trainee poster competition. The winning poster presenter will receive an award stipend of up to $1,200.00 to attend the 2019 American Geriatrics Society (AGS) Meeting in Portland OR on May 2—4, 2019. If unable to submit the winning poster to AGS, the winner will receive $100.00. If the poster submission to AGS is submitted but not accepted for presentation, the winner will receive $500.00.
